Norfolk is starting Friday mild and mostly cloudy, but the day is headed for a sharp weather whiplash: showers and thunderstorms will spread across the city before cooler, drier air settles in for the weekend. Temperatures are in the mid-60s to around 70°F this morning before falling through the afternoon.

Heavy Rain Arrives Friday

Rain is expected through Friday, with the main band reaching Norfolk around early afternoon and widespread showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service says 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain is possible in Hampton Roads, with higher amounts possible.

Briefly heavy downpours, lightning and gusty winds could make driving difficult, especially in urban areas where water may collect quickly. The strongest storms are not expected to be widespread, but a few could produce strong wind gusts and reduced visibility.

Friday’s high is expected to reach about 74 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms may continue into Friday night before tapering around early Saturday, with a low near 54.

Cooler, Calmer Weekend Follows

Saturday should bring a welcome reset, with mostly sunny skies, a high near 61 and northwest breezes, with gusts around 20 to 25 mph. Sunday looks sunnier and a little warmer, with a high near 63 and no rain in the forecast.

The broader outlook is now substantially wetter for Friday than the earlier forecast, a change also reflected in Hoodline’s Thursday update. After the storm system exits, sunshine and dry weather are expected to continue through Monday, with highs near 65 Monday and 70 Tuesday.

Coastal Winds Remain A Concern

Small Craft Advisories are posted for portions of the coastal waters as winds shift from the south to the north and northwest. Boaters should expect rougher conditions Friday night into Saturday, while land-based plans can shift toward the weekend once the rain clears.
