85°C Bakery Cafe has closed its Overland Park location at 12061 Metcalf Ave., shutting its doors on Halloween after operating for just a year and a few months. The Taiwanese bakery chain, which opened in June 2025 to long lines and excited fans, gave no reason for the closure in the notice it posted announcing the news.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery,” the cafe said in its closure notice, as reported by the Kansas City Star. The message expressed regret and gratitude to the customers who had supported the shop since it arrived in Johnson County. The Star's report does not say why the cafe shut down, leaving that question unanswered for now.
A Buzzy Opening Just Last Year
When the cafe opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave. in June 2025, it attracted long lines and excited fans on opening day, some of whom told the Star's sister coverage they had previously visited 85°C locations in Hawaii and Texas before one finally arrived in the Kansas City area. The shop sold individually packaged pastries including jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes and pineapple cake, along with cakes, coffee and bubble tea, according to the outlet's earlier coverage of the opening. A medium iced latte ran $4.55, while many of the pastries were priced under $3, per that same report.
85°C Bakery Cafe is a Taiwanese-based international chain that entered the U.S. market in 2008. Accounts of the chain's founding vary: the same outlet's opening-day report traced its start to Taipei in 2004, while a separate account from the San Diego Union-Tribune places its origin in Taiwan in 2003. By the time it reached Overland Park, the chain had grown to more than 1,000 locations worldwide, according to the Johnson County Post.
Other Asian Bakery Chains Fill the Gap
Overland Park hasn't been left without options for Asian-style bakery fare. Paris Baguette, a chain based in South Korea, opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall and now also operates locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360 Main St. downtown, the same reporting notes. Tous Les Jours, meanwhile, had already been open in Overland Park for close to a decade at 10348 Metcalf Ave. as of last summer, giving the area a longer-running alternative even as 85°C's run there ended abruptly.
Growth Continues Elsewhere in the Chain
While the Overland Park store has closed, 85°C Bakery Cafe has kept expanding in other markets. The chain opened a location in Santee, California, in early May, part of what the Union-Tribune describes as a strategic shift away from bustling city centers and high-traffic malls toward family-centric neighborhoods. During that Santee location's three-day grand opening, the company sold just over 15,000 bread or cake items plus another 3,300 drinks, the Union-Tribune reported. The chain also said it expected to celebrate the opening of its 100th U.S. store sometime in 2026.
