A new cat lounge is heading to downtown Bethesda, with plans to let visitors curl up with adoptable rescue cats while they read, chat with friends, or knock out a few hours of remote work. Paws & Relax Cat Lounge is targeting a spot at 8227 Woodmont Avenue, with an opening planned for winter or spring 2027.
What Paws & Relax Is Planning
According to The MoCo Show, which first reported the plans, the business aims to give guests a comfortable environment to interact with adoptable cats, read, socialize, or work remotely. The lounge is also pitched as a space to directly support animal adoption efforts, giving homeless cats a safe environment and chances to socialize with visitors while they wait for permanent homes.
The address listed for the project, 8227 Woodmont Avenue, currently shows up in a separate commercial listing as a second-generation bakery space available for lease in downtown Bethesda. A LoopNet posting describes it as a turnkey setup originally built out for a bakery, café, coffee shop, or similar food concept, though that listing does not establish any connection to the planned cat lounge.
A Similar Concept Is Already Taking Shape in Gaithersburg
Bethesda's planned lounge isn't the only one of its kind on the way in Montgomery County. CatLands is preparing to open at 375 Main Street in the Kentlands neighborhood of Gaithersburg, according to WhatNow. Owner Shannon Irlander is working through the permitting process there and hopes to begin welcoming visitors by late 2026.
Irlander describes CatLands as a place where guests can relax and spend meaningful time with free-roaming adoptable cats while helping them find their forever homes. The business plans to offer 50-minute lounge visits, with free-roaming rescue cats available for adoption through a local rescue partner. Programming is expected to go beyond simple drop-in visits, with Irlander telling the outlet the lounge will host special events including cat yoga, children's events, trivia, and bingo nights.
What's Still Unclear for Bethesda
Details on Paws & Relax remain limited for now, including exactly how its programming, adoption partnerships, or hours might compare to the Gaithersburg concept. What's confirmed is the Woodmont Avenue address and a target window of winter or spring 2027, giving Bethesda residents a rough timeline for when they might be able to drop in and spend time with a cat between errands or work calls.
