Pendleton County High School briefly went into lockdown on Wednesday after Kentucky State Police requested the precaution because of a developing situation nearby. School officials say the high school itself was not involved in whatever prompted the request, and that all students and staff remained safe throughout.
According to WKRC, Pendleton County Schools said the lockdown was requested by Kentucky State Police due to a potential situation that was happening in the area. The district did not specify what that situation involved, only that it was unfolding somewhere outside the school.
Pendleton County Schools emphasized that the high school itself was not involved in the incident that triggered the lockdown, and reiterated that all students and staff were safe. The district also said Pendleton County High School would remain in restricted movement until law enforcement gave the all-clear, though it's not clear from available information when that clearance came through.
Not the First Lockdown Tied to Nearby Police Activity in Pendleton County
This isn't the first time a Pendleton County school has gone into lockdown because of activity happening off-campus. Back in 2021, Northern Elementary School was placed on lockdown for about two hours during a standoff at a residence located within 100 yards of the school, according to the same local district's earlier statement reported by cincinnati.com. That standoff stretched more than 10 hours before a Kentucky State Police special response team arrested the man involved at about 1:30 a.m.
Similar precautionary lockdowns have played out elsewhere in the state when police activity occurs close to school grounds. In 2024, Robert D. Campbell Jr. High School in Clark County went into a soft lockdown after a shots-fired incident nearby, with the district superintendent describing it as a coordinated effort with police out of an abundance of caution, per WKYT. Winchester Police said at the time that shots were fired in the 200 block of Boone Avenue and that no one was hurt.
What Remains Unknown
Details about exactly what prompted Wednesday's response at Pendleton County High School have not been released, and it's unclear whether anyone was detained, arrested, or injured in connection with the situation. The school's statement, distributed through a social media post and reported by WKRC, did not include further specifics about the nature or precise location of the incident that led Kentucky State Police to request the lockdown.
