A person is dead after a shooting Saturday in South Kansas City. Police are investigating the homicide.
A separate KMBC report placed the 2026 homicide on Longview Road just east of Blue Ridge Boulevard, on the city’s south side. The Bay Water Park was closed for the season at the time of the separate 2025 shooting.
The 2025 Bay Water Park Shooting
On Oct. 4, 2025, 16-year-old Ta’Kori Jones was fatally shot near Bay Water Park, dying several hours later at an area hospital, according to kctv5.com. Investigators in that case believed an interaction between several people in a nearby park escalated into gunfire, the outlet reported, and that shooting came just weeks after a double homicide at the neighboring El Mercado Fresco grocery store that killed 49-year-old Gande A. Salamed and 17-year-old Delvyon Carmichael.
Another South KC Shooting
A separate deadly shooting occurred near East 87th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard on June 19, 2026, also in south Kansas City. One man died and another person was taken into custody in that incident, per kmbc.com. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated an argument involving several people led to gunfire that killed the victim, according to the same report.
Homicides Trending Down Citywide
Saturday’s shooting arrives even as Kansas City has seen homicides decline overall this year. As of Oct. 19, KCPD had reported 108 homicides, a 12% decrease from the same point in 2025 and a five-year low for the department, according to KCUR. Nonfatal shootings have also dropped, with 267 recorded by that point in 2026 compared with 338 at the same time in 2025, a 21% decrease, the station reported.
KCUR’s review found uneven progress across the city: the Center zone recorded 21 homicides this year compared with 26 last year as of Oct. 15, while East patrol recorded 30 compared with 42. Of the 108 homicides logged so far in 2026, 51 stemmed from disagreements that escalated into violence, not counting an Oct. 18 killing still under investigation at the time of that report. KCPD has pointed to focused deterrence efforts that target repeat violent offenders and direct resources toward neighborhoods seeing clusters of shootings.
KMBC 9 News said it plans to provide updates on the investigation as they become available. No further details on the circumstances of Jones’s death have been released.
