Philadelphia rolls out its Veterans Day Parade and Festival this Sunday, Nov. 8, with the parade stepping off at noon on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and a festival following at Eakins Oval. The event is billed as a free, family-friendly celebration honoring the men and women who have served the country, and it comes with a long list of street closures and transit detours that will reshape the area around the Parkway for most of the day.
According to the Philadelphia Fire Department, the parade and festival are scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8, with the parade beginning at noon on the Parkway. WHYY reports the parade route runs from 21st Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Eakins Oval, with the fire department adding that the procession will circle the north side of Eakins Oval before ending on its south side.
Leading this year's procession is Gunnery Sgt. Roosevelt Farrow, whom WHYY describes as New Jersey's last surviving original Montford Point Marine, serving as the 2026 grand marshal. The parade organizer's own event page, Philadelphia Veterans Day Parade, also notes that Hon. Patrick Dugan was welcomed into the 2026 parade broadcast booth.
Festival Plans at Eakins Oval
Once the parade wraps up, the celebration shifts to a festival at Eakins Oval. The fire department's post states the festival runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., while WHYY lists the festival's hours as 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. — the two sources differ on when the event wraps up.
Either way, organizers are promising plenty to do. The fire department's materials describe food vendors, a beer garden, and activities for all ages, alongside career and education resources, health and financial assistance information, and direct access to service providers and workshops. WHYY separately describes a festival featuring live entertainment, food trucks, family-friendly activities, and veterans' organizations offering information on health care, employment, and education.
Road Closures Across the Parkway and Kelly Drive
Getting around the Parkway corridor will take some planning. Per the fire department, Eakins Oval itself will be closed from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the Parkway between 17th and 21st streets, including numbered side streets, closes at 6 a.m. to set up the parade's starting area.
Later in the morning, the closures expand. The Parkway between 21st Street and Eakins Oval, including numbered side streets, is set to close at 11:30 a.m. and stay closed until the parade concludes, the fire department says. The same 11:30 a.m. closure applies to Kelly Drive between Spring Garden Street and 25th Street, the Spring Garden Street off-ramp exit at Eakins Oval, and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
SEPTA Detours and Transit Options
Riders should expect detours on several SEPTA bus lines. The fire department says routes 2, 7, 32, 33, 38, 43, 48, and 49 will be detoured from 5 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, with specific route changes posted to SEPTA's System Status Page.
SEPTA notes that the Museum area can still be reached via the T to 22nd Street, Regional Rail to Suburban Station, the B to Race/Vine, or bus routes 7, 32, 38, 43, and 48 — useful alternatives for anyone planning to catch the parade or festival without driving.
For anyone heading out Sunday, the city is offering a way to stay on top of changing conditions: safety and weather updates for the day can be received by texting READYPhila to 888-777, according to the fire department's post.
How This Year Compares
The scale of this year's event echoes recent history. For comparison, NBC10 Philadelphia reported that the 10th annual parade in 2024 drew more than 100 organizations, over 4,000 participants, and more than 50 veteran service organizations, with that year's festival running until 4 p.m. and featuring food trucks, live music, and resources including job recruitment, health care providers, and financial assistance — similar to what's planned this year, though no 2026 attendance figures have been released.
