A driver is in custody after a black pickup truck struck a 13-year-old on Halloween night and sped away, leaving deputies to track down the vehicle before the night was over. The teen was hurt in the 6400 block of North Nevada Avenue in the Thousand Oaks subdivision, and authorities say the injuries are not believed to be severe or life-threatening.
According to KCTV, Platte County authorities confirmed a driver was taken into custody following the hit-and-run that injured the teen. The black pickup truck hit the teen and then drove off without stopping, leaving investigators to piece together where the vehicle had gone.
That search did not take long. Within an hour, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office tracked down the suspect vehicle and the driver at a residence in Jackson County, according to the same report. The driver was arrested and placed on a 24-hour investigative hold, and the sheriff's office said the driver remained in custody as the investigation continued.
Teen Taken to Hospital, Injuries Called Non-Life-Threatening
The 13-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital following the crash, per the report. The sheriff's office said the teen's injuries are not believed to be severe or life-threatening, though the extent of the teen's treatment and recovery has not been detailed.
The swift resolution of the Thousand Oaks subdivision case stands in contrast to a separate, unrelated hit-and-run elsewhere in Platte County that remains unsolved. As reported by FOX4 Kansas City, a pedestrian was killed after being struck on U.S. 69 at I-635 in Platte County, with the driver fleeing the scene. That victim was identified as a 38-year-old man from Houston, Texas, who was hit at about 8:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators in that case believe the vehicle involved was a silver 2011-14 Toyota 4Runner, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol had sought the public's help locating the suspect or vehicle.
The two cases are not connected, and the evidence does not point to any broader pattern of hit-and-run crashes in the area. Details such as the driver's identity in the Halloween night case, whether formal charges have been filed, and any outcome following the 24-hour investigative hold have not yet been made public.
