A 30-year-old Oregon man already on probation for luring a child was arrested at Portland International Airport after federal agents allegedly found child sexual abuse material hidden on his phone. Alec Joseph Adams arrived at PDX on Oct. 28 on a flight from Reykjavik, Iceland, when a routine customs inspection turned into a federal case.
According to court documents cited by KATU, Customs and Border Protection officers learned during the inspection that Adams was on probation in Lincoln County following convictions for luring a child and online sexual corruption of a child. A preliminary check of his phone allegedly turned up suspected child sexual abuse material, court documents allege, including images and videos depicting sexual abuse of young children reportedly stored in a hidden folder, according to KPTV.
Investigators with Homeland Security Investigations later obtained a search warrant and found additional videos, video thumbnails and images depicting nude children and teens, the same report notes. Federal prosecutors ultimately charged Adams with one count of possession of child pornography, the station's report states.
Prior Lincoln County Case and Probation Status
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon says Adams was on state supervision at the time of his arrest at the airport. Per a statement from U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford's office, Adams was charged by criminal complaint with possession of child sexual abuse material after federal agents allegedly discovered illicit material on his device.
That probation stemmed from an earlier Lincoln County case. In 2024, Alec Adams, then 27 and of Depoe Bay, was arrested after offering to meet with a child for sex, according to a report from KPTV at the time, which led to charges of luring a minor and second-degree online sexual corruption of a child. That arrest came out of joint investigations by Lincoln County police agencies and Oregon State Police in which officers posed as underage children on various online social media platforms, the outlet reported.
Potential Penalties If Convicted
If convicted, Adams could face up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and lifetime probation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. A portion of the federal statute governing such offenses, 18 U.S.C. § 2252A, states that a person who violates, attempts or conspires to violate certain of its provisions shall be imprisoned for not less than five years and not more than 20 years, according to the U.S. House Office of the Law Revision Counsel. That statutory language does not itself determine what sentence Adams would face in his specific case.
Lincoln County has seen other cases involving the sexual exploitation of minors in recent memory. In a separate and unrelated case, a Lincoln County Circuit Court judge sentenced Christopher Lowes to 100 months in prison after a jury found him guilty of luring, drugging and then sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, according to a report from KOIN.
