A Portland man was sentenced Friday to 84 months in prison after admitting to a string of break-ins that hit three apartment buildings and seven businesses across the metro area over roughly 13 months, stealing electronics, bicycles and residents' packages along the way.
Vaugh Michael Hutchins, 41, was sentenced following guilty pleas tied to burglaries that Multnomah County prosecutors say ran from June 2024 through July 2025, according to koin.com. KOIN identified the defendant as Vaugh Michael Hutchins, while a KPTV record of the case spells the name Vaughn Michael Hutchins. Prosecutors say Hutchins broke into the buildings using tools like a pry bar, making off with electronics, bikes and packages left for residents.
A Spree That Started in Sellwood
The first break-in detailed by prosecutors came on June 12, 2024, when Hutchins used a pry bar to get into Holm at Sellwood Apartments on SE 6th Avenue and stole more than $1,000 worth of property, per the koin.com account. Four days later, on June 16, 2024, he allegedly broke into Scott Edwards Architecture on East Burnside Street with the same tool, making off with over $4,000 in electronics. He returned to Holm at Sellwood on June 23, 2024, this time taking packages and bicycles, the outlet's report notes.
Between the June 23 burglary and the December 7 incident, Hutchins also broke into JET Planning on September 8 and October 1, 2024; the September burglary was at its SE 20th Avenue location and involved stolen electronics, according to the same koin.com account. On December 7, 2024, Hutchins broke into Community Vision on SE Ladd Avenue and stole more than $8,000 in electronics, according to the same koin.com account. The spree then resumed in the spring, with Hutchins hitting Tupelo Alley Apartments on N Mississippi Avenue on April 7, 2025, stealing packages from multiple residents there.
Electronics Thefts Closed Out the Pattern
Hutchins returned to the Mississippi Avenue corridor twice more in April, breaking into Control Voltage on April 8 and again on April 14, 2025, making off with more than $5,000 in electronics combined, the report states. The last documented burglary came July 1, 2025, when Hutchins broke into LoveSac on NW 23rd Avenue and stole over $1,000 in electronics, closing out a pattern that spanned more than a year and touched businesses and apartment complexes scattered across the city.
Other Recent Portland Burglary Sentences
Hutchins's case is one of several recent Multnomah County prosecutions targeting repeat burglars. In a separate case, Christopher McGinnis was sentenced to 50 months in prison and three years of post-prison supervision after breaking into three Portland apartment buildings a combined 11 times between June and September 2025 to steal bicycles from storage rooms, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney.
Gregory Whitson, 43, was sentenced to 100 months in prison for burglary and theft offenses in downtown Portland and ordered to pay more than $130,000 in restitution to his victims, the district attorney's office said in a separate release. And in another case, Multnomah County Judge David Rees sentenced Joshua Patrick Lucero to nine years in prison for his role in a burglary ring, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney.
