Red Light Bar & Detroit Pizza looks like it is finally closing in on a reopening at its new Logan Circle-area address. The bar and pizza spot, long known for its corner at 14th and R Streets NW, appears to be settling into its new home a few blocks away at 14th and Florida Avenue NW.
According to PoPville, Red Light's new location sits at 1406 Florida Avenue NW, inside what the outlet describes as a building with a fresh new paint job. The move takes the business from its old spot at 14th and R into the former Pica Taco space at 14th and Florida, PoPville reports.
The relocation was first announced back in June, when Red Light assured regulars that the business was not shutting down. “Red Light is not closing. We are relocating!” the bar said at the time, per the same PoPville report from earlier this year. The announcement came after the business's old space turned up in a leasing brochure, prompting questions from neighbors about its future.
Red Light’s move comes amid a period of restaurant turnover in the District, though that does not establish why this business relocated. A 2025 survey of 217 area restaurants by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington found that 44% of District full-service casual restaurants said they were likely to close in the coming year. The association also counted 155 new restaurant openings and 73 closures in the District in 2024, a reminder that closures and new ventures can happen side by side. The association’s survey and turnover figures offer broader context for the neighborhood’s changing dining scene.
A New Corner, Same Address Block
In that June announcement, Red Light told PoPville it had already secured its next spot, saying, “we've already found our new home on the corner of 14th & Florida.” The business also laid out a timeline for the switch, stating, “We plan to be open by early Autumn,” though that was a stated goal rather than a confirmed opening date, according to the report.
Months later, Red Light appears to be nearing opening at its new Florida Avenue location.
The new address also has a posted alcohol-license notice detailing a compact setup: it lists 14 seats inside, an occupancy limit of 17 and an eight-seat sidewalk café. The notice was posted at 1406 Florida Avenue in July, before the reported push toward opening. That gives neighbors a clearer picture of the planned seating than the early relocation announcements did, though it does not establish whether the sidewalk tables are already in place. The posted license placard identifies the new venue as a Class C restaurant.
What Red Light Is Known For
For regulars wondering what to expect at the new address, Red Light has built its reputation on a specific combination: Detroit-style pizza paired with a buzzy bar scene. The Infatuation describes the business as a corner bar in Logan Circle with a sidewalk patio, a description that fit its longtime 14th and R location.
Red Light’s pizza identity took shape in 2019, when restaurateur Aaron Gordon and chef Naomi Gallego revamped the menu around Detroit-style square pies. Gallego, a Michigan native, brought the style she grew up eating to the 14th Street bar; Eater called the launch D.C.’s first Detroit-style pizza. The pies helped distinguish Red Light from nearby spots focused on wood-fired and Neapolitan pizza, while the bar kept its cocktails, wine and beer menu.
The review site also points to one of the bar's signature draws beyond the pizza itself: its drink menu. As The Infatuation puts it, part of the appeal has long been that “it's the $9 espresso martinis.” Whether the new Florida Avenue space will keep the same sidewalk patio setup has not been detailed in current reporting, but the pizza and cocktail combination appears to be following the business to its new corner.
