Richmond is starting Thursday with temperatures near 64 degrees and mostly cloudy skies, as light showers move through central Virginia, but the city is headed for a warm afternoon near 78. SSW winds will be 11.5 to 17 mph, making it feel more like early fall than November.

Afternoon Warmth Comes With A Brief Shower Chance

Mostly cloudy skies should prevail through much of the day, with isolated showers possible during the afternoon. A 20% chance of rain this afternoon means most outdoor plans should avoid a washout.

The setup is a sharper turn from Hoodline’s earlier Richmond forecast, which had framed Thursday as mainly warm with only limited daytime rain. The bigger weather story now begins after sunset.

Rain Chances Increase Thursday Night

The National Weather Service expects shower and thunderstorm chances to increase Thursday night, with rain becoming likely later in the evening and overnight. The overnight rain chance is around 70%.

Friday looks like the wettest part of the stretch, with widespread rain expected and only a few embedded thunderstorms possible, particularly in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Rain chances reach 100%, and 0.50 to 1 inch of rain appears reasonable farther inland, while 1.25 to 2 inches is expected in eastern Virginia, northeastern North Carolina and the Eastern Shore. Temperatures fall from a high near 73 toward the mid-60s during the afternoon.

For Richmond and other inland parts of central Virginia, around a half-inch to 1 inch appears reasonable, though locally heavier downpours are possible.

Sunny, Cooler Weekend Follows

Rain should taper Friday night, setting up a much calmer weekend. Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be mostly sunny, with highs generally in the mid to upper 60s, while overnight lows dip into the mid to upper 30s.

Dry weather continues into Monday and Tuesday, with sunny skies and highs near 65 and 68. No watches, warnings or advisories are listed for the Richmond area.
