A 65-year-old Roselle man was killed early Friday morning after being struck by three separate vehicles on a busy Newark roadway, authorities said. Darryl Jenkins was hit on the 400 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue at 6:20 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.
All three drivers involved stopped after the crash, according to NJ.com, which first reported the incident. The outlet said the investigation remains ongoing, and it was not immediately clear what led up to the collision.
Authorities told Daily Voice that none of the three drivers showed signs of impairment. The same report noted that Route 27, which runs along Frelinghuysen Avenue through that stretch of Newark, was closed Friday morning as crews and investigators worked the scene.
Prosecutor's Office Seeks Tips
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Office at 1-877-847-7432, with the agency noting that all calls are confidential. No further details about the circumstances of the collision, including how the vehicles struck Jenkins or whether charges are expected, have been released.
Friday's crash is at least the third fatal roadway incident reported in Newark since early October. On October 10, a 69-year-old Newark man, Joseph A. Vasquez, died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in the city's South Ward, per a report from RLS Media, which said police responded to the intersection of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Haynes Avenue at approximately 12:52 p.m. that day.
The following day, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian on McCarter Highway, also known as Route 21, in Newark on October 11. No connection between that case and Friday's crash on Frelinghuysen Avenue has been reported.
