A man in his 40s is dead after a chain-reaction crash that sent his vehicle across a center divider in Sacramento on Tuesday. The California Highway Patrol says he was possibly under the influence at the time, though no citations or test results have been disclosed.
According to KCRA, the man moved his vehicle from the No. 3 lane into the No. 1 lane before rear-ending a car driven by a woman in her 40s. The impact sent his vehicle across the center divider, where it struck a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s, the station reports. CHP officers responded to the area of Watt Avenue, south of Cottage Way, around 5:30 p.m., per the station's account.
A separate CHP Fatal Accident Feed entry for a fatality at Watt Avenue and Cottage Way lists the roadway as clear at 3:52 p.m. that same day, a timing detail that doesn't line up cleanly with KCRA's reported 5:30 p.m. officer response. The discrepancy between the two timestamps hasn't been resolved, and neither record explains the gap.
What CHP Has Said So Far
CHP's only stated suspicion in this case is that the man who died was possibly under the influence, a determination that stops short of confirming impairment, test results, or any charges. No names have been released for any of the drivers involved, and the exact time of the initial collision has not been specified beyond the officer response window cited by the same account.
The crash adds to a string of serious collisions along the Watt Avenue corridor in recent months. In September, Hoodline reported that a motorcyclist died after a crossover SUV turned in front of him near Arden Way in Arden-Arcade, with the SUV's driver leaving the scene. That report also noted Sacramento County ranked first among 15 large California county jurisdictions for speed-related fatal and injury collisions in 2023, logging 745 speed-involved crashes — though that figure doesn't establish speed as a factor in Tuesday's crash.
A Pattern Along Sacramento's Roadways
Other Watt Avenue-area crashes have drawn attention this year as well. The Sacramento Bee reported that a passenger was killed and the driver injured after a car crashed into the center divider on westbound I-80 near Watt Avenue, while CBS News Sacramento described a separate incident in which a man driving a black Chevrolet truck reportedly crossed the center median and crashed into a white Ford Explorer on southbound Watt Avenue. In North Highlands, the Bee also reported that a man was killed and two drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a two-vehicle crash. None of those incidents are connected to Tuesday's crash, but they reflect a corridor that has seen repeated serious collisions.
No further details have been released about the conditions of the other two drivers involved in Tuesday's crash. CHP has not indicated whether additional findings or charges are expected as the investigation continues.
