A motorcycle crash on San Antonio's East Side early this weekend left a 34-year-old woman with serious bodily injuries and ended with the driver, a 32-year-old man, under arrest on a DWI charge, according to police.
The crash happened Saturday on Interstate 10 East near North Graytown Road, according to KABB, which reported that police said the driver missed an exit, veered into a dirt median, and crashed the bike. The woman had been riding as a passenger and suffered serious bodily injuries in the wreck, per the outlet. Officers at the scene determined the driver was intoxicated and arrested him for driving while intoxicated, KABB reported, citing police.
A separate crash was reported by KENS5: around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, a 31-year-old woman was a passenger on a motorcycle that lost control and hit a guardrail near the Vance Jackson exit on I-10. That station reported the driver got back on the bike and kept going, leaving the woman behind at the scene. KENS5 said she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with several broken bones.
Two Separate Motorcycle Crashes
The reports describe separate crashes: KENS5's account concerns a Thursday, October 29 crash near the Vance Jackson exit, while KABB's concerns a Saturday, October 31 crash near North Graytown Road. KENS5 reported that both the driver and the woman in the Thursday crash were in critical condition as of Thursday morning, and that he was later arrested and charged with collision involving serious bodily injury. In the Saturday crash, KABB reported that police determined the driver was intoxicated and arrested him on a DWI allegation. KABB reported that no additional information about the woman's condition was immediately available.
A Pattern on San Antonio Roadways
This is not the only serious motorcycle crash to hit San Antonio's highways this year. In June, a 45-year-old woman riding a motorcycle died after losing control on a Loop 410 ramp on the Northwest Side, according to the San Antonio Express-News, citing the San Antonio Police Department. In another incident, a suspected drunk driver speeding on North Loop 1604 lost control and hit a concrete pillar, killing a 22-year-old passenger, as reported by News 4 San Antonio; that driver was hospitalized.
The Texas Department of Transportation maintains a traffic-safety data portal tracking motorcycle fatality trends and the life-saving impact of helmets statewide. No current, fully verified figures from that portal or from the agency's broader crash-statistics archives were available to compare against this latest San Antonio case. What is clear from the reporting so far is that a woman suffered serious injuries, and that police arrested the motorcycle's driver in connection with the crash.
