Veterans across Western Massachusetts now have a single walk-in office to turn to for state benefits and services, after the Executive Office of Veterans Services opened its first full-service location in the region at 1550 Main St. in Springfield on Monday. The office sits on the first floor of the former federal building in downtown Springfield and is staffed by about 10 full-time employees.
According to MassLive, the office is the first walk-in location designed to make services easier to reach for an estimated 42,000 veterans in Western Massachusetts. The state is renting the space for $52,000 a year, and officials say it will coordinate services ranging from vet-to-vet peer mentor programs and treatment help to veterans court assistance and mental health care.
A One-Stop Hub for the Region
The new office also partners with outside nonprofit veterans groups, including Soldier On, to extend its reach, the same MassLive report notes. Per WWLP, the Springfield location also provides assistance with financial benefits, employment and training programs, and services specifically for women veterans, along with space set aside for events and community gatherings.
Eric Goralnick said the office gives families fixed structure and open access, calling it an opportunity to be a beacon, as reported by WWLP. State Sen. John Velis was also quoted on the opening, according to MassLive.
Years in the Making
WWLP reports the office was in the making for more than a year before its Monday opening and now operates under a 10-year lease. The site is funded through the Executive Office of Veterans Services fiscal year 2027 budget and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., per WWLP.
The push for a dedicated Western Massachusetts location comes against a broader demographic shift. Of the more than 274,000 veterans statewide, more than half are over 65 and are moving to more rural communities, according to the same MassLive report. The Executive Office of Veterans Services already operates several other locations across the Commonwealth, including Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemeteries and satellite offices at the VA, according to Mass.gov.
Local Resources Still in Place
The new state office arrives alongside Springfield's existing city-run veterans resource. The City of Springfield's Department of Veterans' Services has long furnished information, advice and assistance to veterans and their dependents, according to the City of Springfield. With the new state office now open on Main Street, veterans in the region have another option for accessing state benefits and services.
