Halloween came to Methodist Children's Hospital on Friday, where Spurs forward Julian Champagnie appeared in a full Shrek costume. He handed out Spurs merchandise and candy and signed autographs during the hospital's annual reverse trick-or-treating event for children who cannot go out to celebrate.
The event brings Halloween activities to patients' rooms, according to foxsanantonio.com. Champagnie was joined by the Spurs Coyote, and they visited hospital units, greeting patients, posing for photos and handing out treats.
A Second Year in the Costume Rotation
This was Champagnie's second year taking part in the celebration. At last year's event, he wore a Scooby-Doo costume, the outlet reports.
The hospital holds reverse trick-or-treating each year, with leaders visiting patients' rooms to hand out treats, WOAI News 4 reported.
A Family's Brief Escape From a Hard Stay
FOX also spoke with Felicia Barrera, a parent whose child was among the patients visited. She described the appearance as a welcome bright spot for her family during their hospital stay.
The room-to-room format lets children take part in the Halloween celebration while they remain in the hospital.
Part of a Broader Pattern of Outreach
The visit is part of the Spurs' ongoing community outreach efforts, the station noted, and it isn't Champagnie's first trip to Methodist Children's Hospital this year. Back in June, Champagnie and Spurs star Victor Wembanyama spent several hours visiting patients and families at the same hospital, according to KSAT, gifting signed memorabilia, stuffed animals and jerseys along the way. During that visit, the two players gave patient Jesiah Trinidad autographed shirts after he underwent appendix surgery.
How the Earlier Hospital Visit Differed
In a separate visit, Victor Wembanyama and Champagnie spent several hours with patients and families, who received signed memorabilia, stuffed animals and jerseys, KSAT reported on June 16, 2026. That visit brought two Spurs players to the hospital; the Halloween event centered on Champagnie's costume appearance and the room-to-room holiday celebration.
By bringing the holiday into patient rooms, the annual event gives hospitalized children a way to join in without leaving the hospital. This year's visit paired the familiar Halloween character Shrek with a Spurs player known to local fans.
