Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea has closed its doors in Richardson, ending a seven-year run at the Shire Boulevard shopping center where the cafe served up specialty coffees, teas, pastries, desserts and sandwiches. The closure leaves a notable gap in the Richardson coffee scene for a brand that once had ambitious growth plans across North Texas and beyond.
According to Community Impact, which first reported the closure, Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea is now closed in Richardson. The outlet's report, published Wednesday afternoon, confirmed the shop had shuttered after first opening its doors in 2019.
A Neighborhood Fixture on Shire Boulevard
The Richardson location sat at 3613 Shire Blvd., Suite 110, per the cafe's own location page on the Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea website. Since opening in 2019, the cafe built a following for its specialty drinks and food menu, with the Community Impact report noting it served specialty coffees, teas, pastries, desserts and sandwiches to regulars in the area.
Beyond its food and drink offerings, the chain built its identity around a broader footprint. Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea has locations across the country, the report notes, reflecting a brand presence that extended well past the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs where the Richardson shop operated.
Part of a Once-Expanding Regional Brand
When the Richardson cafe first opened in 2019, Sweetwaters was in serious expansion mode. At the time, the company had more than 100 locations planned across the country, according to a 2019 report from CultureMap Dallas. That same report counted five Sweetwaters locations spread across the Dallas-Fort Worth area's northern suburbs, including spots in Allen, McKinney, Little Elm and Denton, alongside the newly opened Richardson shop.
Those growth plans made the Richardson opening feel like part of something bigger for local coffee drinkers back in 2019. Now, with the Shire Boulevard location closed, it marks a notable retreat for a brand that once had its sights set on blanketing North Texas with new cafes.
