A 911 call reporting gunfire and a possible hostage situation inside a Taylor Mill home triggered a five-hour police response that ended with a 55-year-old man arrested in the woods behind the house. John Patrick Adkins now faces charges including wanton endangerment, assault and unlawful imprisonment after officers say they found him hiding nearby once a search warrant was underway.
According to fox19.com, a 911 caller said a man had fired a gun and was possibly holding a woman inside the home against her will. Officers worked to get the woman safely out of the house, the station reports, and she made it out without further incident. Taylor Mill Police Chief James Mills said officers then established a perimeter, but at that point did not know whether the man was barricaded inside the home or had already run off.
Search Warrant Leads Officers Into the Woods
While investigators worked to secure a search warrant, officers spotted the suspect in the woods behind the house, the station's report states. He was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Kenton County Detention Center. Police identified him as John Patrick Adkins, 55, and said he is facing several charges including wanton endangerment, assault and unlawful imprisonment.
The situation tied up the area for hours. Per wlwt.com, officers were on scene for five hours, with the road blocked off for the duration of the response. The outlet reported that outside agencies, including Newport, Covington, Independence and the Kenton County Sheriff's Office, assisted Taylor Mill police during the standoff.
What the Charges Could Mean
Court documents detail the specific degree of each charge, and two of the allegations against Adkins correspond to named Kentucky offenses. State law identifies KRS 508.060 as wanton endangerment in the first degree, while KRS 509.020 covers unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, according to the Kentucky General Assembly's statute pages.
