A 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday morning after assaulting an adult with a knife near the corner of Cheryl Lane and North Rose Street in Phoenix, Oregon. The victim suffered a severe hand laceration and was rushed to a local hospital, while the teenage suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.
The attack happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. near Phoenix High School, according to KOBI-TV NBC5. Despite the proximity to campus, the station reported that neither the suspect nor the victim was affiliated with the school, and the incident took place off campus. A school resource officer on the scene confirmed the assault involved a knife.
Quick Police Response Averts Lockdown
Talent and Phoenix police responded to the scene, and the station's report indicates law enforcement apprehended the suspect before a full campus lockdown was ever needed. Police Chief Derek Bowker said a traffic enforcement officer who happened to already be in the city assisted regular patrols, which allowed for a rapid response. That quick turnaround, per the same account, helped bring the situation under control quickly.
Phoenix High School still locked its front doors as a precaution once word of the nearby attack reached administrators, but the school did not initiate a full secure protocol. Classes continued as usual without interruption, and no students or staff were harmed during the event.
District Credits Communication, Sends Letter to Families
Superintendent Brent Barry credited swift communication between the school district and law enforcement partners for maintaining campus security and minimizing disruptions, the station's report notes. The school also sent a letter to families confirming that safety procedures were followed and that there was no threat to student or staff safety. School administrators directed parents with further questions to contact the Phoenix Police Department.
The response drew on an existing partnership between local schools and law enforcement. Phoenix-Talent School District 4 says it runs a School Resource Officer program through a collaborative arrangement with the Phoenix and Talent Police Departments, according to the Phoenix-Talent School District. The district also points to a 2017 community bond measure that funded security upgrades across its school buildings, a project it says reflected residents' commitment to student safety at the time.
