A 17-year-old was booked into jail this week after deputies say he was one of three students who jumped a classmate in a hallway at Mountain View High School in El Paso, leaving the victim with a swollen face and a bump on his head. Anthony Leon Borjas was arrested Wednesday on a charge of assault causing bodily injury and remained behind bars under a $2,500 bond as of Friday afternoon.
According to KFOX14/CBS4, El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the campus Wednesday morning and saw two people running away from the school, including Borjas. Deputies brought Borjas and two other students to the principal's office to sort out what had happened, and the principal showed them surveillance footage of the incident.
What the Surveillance Video Reportedly Showed
Per the station's report, the surveillance video appeared to show the victim standing in a hallway waiting for a classroom to open before he was jumped by three students. The victim told deputies he felt several punches and covered his head during the assault, and he said he recognized Borjas' voice insulting him as the attack unfolded. The teen reportedly told deputies he did not know why he was targeted.
Deputies described the victim's face as swollen and red following the assault, and one deputy reported feeling a bump on top of the victim's head, the same account notes. Borjas is now facing assault charges for allegedly attacking another student at the campus, per the arrest report and jail records cited in the coverage.
School District Response
Clint Independent School District said it was aware of the incident and handled it under the Student Code of Conduct, adding that law enforcement was contacted. The district said it could not directly discuss student discipline in the case.
Under Texas law, a person commits assault if they intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly cause bodily injury to another, according to the Texas Constitution and Statutes. That statutory language defines the offense generally and does not establish the outcome of this particular case. As of Friday afternoon, Borjas remained in jail under the $2,500 bond, and it was not clear whether additional charges would be filed against the other students involved.
