Trinity College's endowment has climbed past $1 billion for the first time in the Hartford institution's history, the school announced Friday, putting it in a club that fewer than 200 American colleges and universities can claim. The figure, drawn from an independent audit of Trinity's fiscal-year 2026 financial statements, puts the endowment at approximately $1.014 billion.

Trinity made the announcement in a statement issued Friday, as reported by WTNH. The station reported the endowment stands at roughly $1.014 billion according to that independent audit of the school's fiscal-year 2026 financial statements, and that Trinity now counts itself among the fewer than 200 colleges and universities nationwide with endowments exceeding $1 billion.

That threshold didn't come out of nowhere. Trinity's own financial statements, filed with the college's accounting office, show the endowment had already reached $912,003,441 as of June 30, 2025, up from $850,725,222 a year earlier. Within that FY2025 total, $859,015,671 was held directly by Trinity, while another $34,188,362 sat in funds held in trust by others, according to the college's audited financial statements.

A Decade of Steady Growth

The billion-dollar milestone caps years of incremental gains rather than a single windfall. Trinity's endowment rose from $791.3 million in June 2023 to $834.7 million in June 2024, according to the college's FY24 endowment report. That same report noted the fund had more than doubled since 2010, when it stood at just $356.8 million.

Further back, the college's own retrospective in the Trinity Reporter put the endowment at $543 million in 2013, climbing to $791 million by June 2023 — a compounded annual growth rate the college described as 3 percent over that stretch. An earlier Board of Trustees update had flagged a $783 million mark as a 35 percent year-over-year jump and, at the time, the highest value in the college's history.

What's Inside the Fund

Trinity's endowment isn't one pot of money. The college's financial statements describe it as consisting of more than 1,000 individual funds established for a variety of purposes, a structure common among college and university endowments, which are typically built from hundreds or thousands of separate accounts. Individual endowments are often restricted by the donors who created them for a particular use, such as financial aid, per the college's statement reported by WTNH.

How Trinity Compares Nationally

Trinity's growth tracks a broader uptick across higher education. The 657 U.S. colleges, universities and affiliated foundations that took part in the 2025 NACUBO-Commonfund Study reported a combined $944.3 billion in endowment assets, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers. The median endowment among those institutions was $253.6 million, and more than a quarter held $100 million or less — context that places Trinity's new billion-dollar figure well above the typical participant.

Nationally, those institutions reported a 10.9 percent one-year return and a 7.7 percent annualized return over the past decade for FY25, NACUBO found. Participating schools also withdrew $33.4 billion from their endowments during FY25, an 11 percent increase from the prior year, as endowments funded an average of 15.2 percent of participating institutions' annual operating expenses, up from 14 percent in FY24.

Trinity has not detailed how its own FY26 returns or spending compare to those national figures. For now, the college is framing the billion-dollar threshold as a historic first, built fund by fund over more than a decade of steady gains.
