A custom-hat business that started on a laundry-room table in Vacherie now has its own storefront on LA 20, stocked with apparel, outdoor gear and the kind of personalized headwear that put it on the map. Swamp Authority, owned by Ryan and Montana Peltier, recently celebrated its grand opening at 22140 LA 20, Suite D, marking the next chapter for a brand that began as Da Swamp Hat Co.

From a Home Operation to a Storefront on LA 20

The Peltiers’ earlier business, Da Swamp Hat Co., began as a custom-hat operation at home. In an interview with L’Observateur, Montana Peltier described making hats in the couple’s laundry room before the business grew into a storefront.

The couple chose their hometown for the shop. Peltier told the outlet they wanted to give Vacherie residents a local place to find apparel and outdoor gear, rather than having to drive out of town for those items.

Custom Hats, Patches and a Full Outdoor Lineup

Custom hats remain part of Swamp Authority’s lineup, alongside clothing and outdoor products. The shop offers different hat styles with custom leatherette, UV-printed and embroidered patches, according to L’Observateur’s report.

The reported selection also includes men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, hunting and fishing accessories, boots and other outdoor products. Peltier told L’Observateur the couple aims to offer a range of options while reflecting the area’s Louisiana roots.

Community Support Behind the Expansion

Peltier credited family, friends and customers with supporting the business from its early days through the store opening, according to L’Observateur. The couple has said they are proud to have built the business in Vacherie.

The Peltiers’ plans include expanding the product selection and bringing new offerings to the area. They hope the store will draw local shoppers looking for distinctive goods and custom-made products, while retaining the character of the business’s early days, Peltier told L’Observateur.

Statewide context and local business support

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis’ 2023 Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account, manufacturing was Louisiana’s largest industry group by outdoor-recreation value added. The account provides a statewide measure; it does not establish local demand for Swamp Authority. For businesses seeking startup or expansion advice, St. James Parish says the Small Business Development Center offers one-on-one consultations at the Vacherie Courthouse Annex on Wednesdays and by appointment. The parish’s information does not indicate that the Peltiers used the service.

Swamp Authority is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
