Republican Greg VanWoerkom has earned the seat representing Michigan's 88th House District, according to unofficial election results from Tuesday's general election. With 92% of votes counted, VanWoerkom held a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger Kiel Reid in a district that stretches across parts of Muskegon and Ottawa counties.

VanWoerkom won with 27,672 votes, or 53.9%, to Reid's 23,626 votes, or 46.1%, according to figures from the Associated Press reported by MLive.com. Reid, who challenged incumbent VanWoerkom in the Nov. 3 general election, ran as a small business owner and local zoning official.

The result is closer than VanWoerkom’s previous general-election contest in the district. In 2024, he defeated Democrat Tim Meyer with 57% of the vote to Meyer’s 43%; this year’s unofficial figures put VanWoerkom at 53.9%, narrowing his margin from about 14 percentage points to 7.8. The 2024 district results show VanWoerkom won 33,591 votes to Meyer’s 25,367.

Who Reid Is

Reid owns The Griffin's Rest and chairs the Norton Shores Zoning Board of Appeals, per the same report. He also describes himself as a husband, father and neighbor, a framing that leaned into his local roots rather than statewide political credentials.

VanWoerkom, meanwhile, arrived at Tuesday's contest with a long record in Lansing. He has served four terms in the Michigan House, and he previously represented the 91st District before redistricting changed district lines and reshaped the map into the current 88th District.

The 88th District’s boundaries trace to Michigan’s 2021 state House map, rather than to a district created specifically for VanWoerkom. The map was adopted by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission under authority in Article IV, Section 6 of the state constitution. The state’s district map identifies the 88th boundaries under that 2021 plan, the redistricting that shifted VanWoerkom from the 91st District.

A District Spanning Two Counties

The 88th District encompasses portions of Muskegon and Ottawa counties, including Norton Shores, Grand Haven, Ferrysburg and Spring Lake, along with the townships of Olive, Crockery, Port Sheldon, Grand Haven and Robinson, according to the earlier MLive report on VanWoerkom's primary win. That geographic footprint included communities in both counties.

VanWoerkom's path to Tuesday's win began back on Aug. 4, when he won the Republican primary election.
