A Stretch of Road With a Troubled History
Friday's crash is not the first time a pedestrian has been struck along Washington Street in Westwood. In March 2022, a pedestrian was hit by a car on a Thursday afternoon and had to be flown to a Boston hospital for treatment of serious injuries, per the report from WCVB. That earlier crash happened on the same roadway, between the Westwood Fire Department's Islington Station and a Roche Bros. supermarket, the station noted.
Other pedestrian incidents have also surfaced in town records. A police log entry reviewed by Westwood Minute described officers responding to the intersection of Gay and Thatcher streets at 6:03 p.m. after a motor vehicle struck a pedestrian, who remained conscious but reported pain to the head, neck, and right ankle.
Prior Case Shows Legal Stakes for Pedestrians
Pedestrian injury cases in Westwood have sometimes carried significant legal and financial consequences. The law firm Mahaney & Pappas has described representing a woman who was walking in a Westwood crosswalk in 2023 when a delivery vehicle backed into her, a case the firm says ended in a $425,000 settlement for its client, according to its own case summary posted on the Mahaney & Pappas website.
As of Friday, the man's name, his condition after being transported, and the cause of the crash had not been disclosed. No information has been released about whether the driver stayed at the scene or whether any citations have been issued in connection with the incident.
