Kansas City's Northland is lighting up for the holidays tonight as Winter Magic opens its 2026-27 season at Platte Purchase Park, with gates set to glow starting at 6 p.m. and the drive-through display running nightly through Jan. 2. This year's show brings a new 16-foot-tall singing reindeer face, remixed light displays and fresh music to the route, along with the return of a scavenger hunt that sends visitors searching for a hidden pickle.
A Returning Holiday Tradition Finds Its Footing in the Northland
According to Kansas City Parks & Recreation, Winter Magic opens for the 2026-27 season on Wednesday at Platte Purchase Park, located at 10400 N. Platte Purchase Drive. The event listing describes this as the event's seventh year in Kansas City and its third year at the Northland park, though a separate FAQ page on the event's own website refers to it as the sixth year in a row — the two sources don't agree on the exact count. As FOX 4 Kansas City reports, the display offers roughly 60 nights of holiday lights, music, festive treats and giveaways between its opening night and the Jan. 2 closing date.
The drive-through route itself is described with slightly different measurements depending on the source. Kansas City Parks & Recreation calls it a one-mile drive-through display, while the Winter Magic event's own 2026 experience page describes it as more than a mile of synchronized lights, animated displays and festive music, and the site's FAQ page puts it at nearly one mile. Whatever the precise distance, organizers say the new 16-foot-tall singing reindeer face joins remixed light displays and new music along the route this season, per the parks department's announcement.
New Reindeer, Returning Pickle Hunt Headline This Season
Beyond the lights, Winter Magic is bringing back its scavenger hunt for Dilly, a small green pickle hidden somewhere along the route. Kansas City Parks & Recreation says visitors who spot Dilly can win prizes including free admission and snacks. The route also includes stops where guests can buy Topsy's popcorn in multiple flavors and saltwater taffy made by the Taffy Shop, according to the event's FAQ page.
Tickets are sold online and start at $20 per vehicle before taxes and fees, though the FAQ notes that weekends and certain nights around the holidays will run $30 or $40 per vehicle, with an additional $7 charged for those who pay at the gate when a timeslot is available. That pricing structure echoes how the event was priced during its first Northland season in 2024, when Kansas City Parks & Recreation listed $20 tickets Monday through Thursday, $30 on Friday and Sunday, and $40 on Saturdays. A portion of this year's proceeds will again benefit KC Parks and Children's Mercy, organizers say.
From Downtown Roots to a Northland Fixture
Winter Magic wasn't always a Platte Purchase Park staple. Kansas City Parks & Recreation announced the event's move to the Northland for the 2024 season, when it ran nightly from Nov. 1, 2024, through Jan. 5, 2025, with displays that included sections devoted to the 12 Days of Christmas, a toy workshop and a Kansas City-pride theme. A Kansas City Star report on a subsequent season described the event opening Nov. 1 and running through Jan. 4, with opening-night tickets priced at $30 and general admission ranging from $20 to $40 per vehicle — pricing details that track closely with what organizers are advertising for this year's run.
With the gates opening tonight, Northland families looking for a holiday outing have roughly two months to make the drive before the season wraps up on Jan. 2. Organizers continue to point to the new reindeer display and the hunt for Dilly as the season's headline additions, even as the exact route length and the event's precise year count remain described differently across official sources.
