A 28-year-old woman is dead and a 44-year-old man is hospitalized after Kent County sheriff's deputies stopped a truck in Nelson Township following a 911 call about a blood-covered man showing up at a nearby home. Deputies were dispatched just before 11 a.m. Monday to a residence near Lincoln Lake Avenue and 19 Mile Road, east of Cedar Springs, after a caller reported the man arrived in distress and covered in blood.
The man left the caller's home in a truck before deputies arrived on scene, according to WOODTV.com. Deputies located and stopped the truck a short time later near the intersection of 18 Mile Road and Pine Lake Avenue in Nelson Township. Inside, they found the woman deceased and the man bleeding heavily with serious injuries, according to seed facts from MLive.
Deputies Tried to Save the Woman at the Scene
Deputies and medical responders attempted life-saving measures on the woman, but her injuries proved too severe, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, the station's report notes. The man, meanwhile, was airlifted by Aero Med to a Grand Rapids hospital with serious injuries and was later listed in stable condition, per the same account.
Both the woman and the man suffered what authorities described as knife-style cutting wounds, though investigators had not determined whether the injuries stemmed from an altercation or something else, according to WOOD Radio. Deputies confirmed the two people knew each other, and investigators believed they were the only two involved in the incident, the station reported.
Investigators Unsure Exactly Where the Injuries Occurred
A central question remains unresolved: where the injuries actually happened. The sheriff said it was possible the wounds were inflicted in neighboring Montcalm County, possibly in the Greenville area, rather than in Kent County itself, per the WOODTV.com report.
Investigators were coordinating across jurisdictions to sort that out. “We are working with Montcalm County and Greenville Public Safety right now to determine if this incident occurred in their jurisdiction or occurred here in Kent County,” officials said, according to FOX 17.
