A disagreement over batting order at a Cherokee County youth baseball game turned physical on Halloween, with one coach shoving another in the head in front of players as young as 11 and 12. Both coaches have been suspended for the rest of the season, and one has been permanently banned from coaching at Hobgood Park in Woodstock.
The fight broke out during a game at Hobgood Park, located off Towne Lake Parkway, after the coaches began arguing over players batting out of order, according to WSB-TV. The dispute escalated when one coach shoved the other in the head, the station reported, with young players on the field watching the confrontation unfold.
Both coaches have been suspended for the remainder of the season, and the station reported that one of them is now permanently prohibited from coaching at Hobgood. The Hobgood Baseball Board said it is still reviewing whether any additional disciplinary action is needed. League leadership has not publicly released the names of the coaches involved or detailed what sparked the physical dispute, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
League Leaders Call the Fight Unacceptable
Hobgood Baseball Board of Directors posted a statement on social media calling the fight completely unacceptable, per the same WSB-TV report. Parent Michele Goggins said the fight was uncalled for, adding that aggression and violence are unacceptable. Parent Cameron Clark said the coaches should have set aside their differences for the benefit of the children.
Hobgood Baseball told the station that every volunteer on the field or in the dugout had completed a background screening. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said deputies were never called about the fight and that no one has filed a formal complaint. The station reported there is no law enforcement investigation into what happened.
Not the First Youth Sports Scuffle to Draw Scrutiny
Fights among adults at youth sports games have drawn attention elsewhere too. At a youth softball game at Imperial Park in Sugar Land, Texas, three parents got into a physical altercation that left one man unconscious, and two people were arrested, according to Athletic Business. That altercation reportedly began after a parent, Kiarious Hall, was told he could not cheer that way just before the players were about to pitch. The victim's attorney said the man suffered a broken jaw, fractured skull and brain bleeds in that incident.
Police were quickly called to the Sugar Land altercation, and Kiarious Hall and his wife were taken into custody. For now, the Hobgood Baseball Board's internal review continues as the league weighs whether the suspensions already issued are enough.
