Chief US District Judge Vaughn Walker just announced his decision in the case of Perry v. Schwarzenegger declaring Proposition 8, which has banned same-sex marriage in California since being approved by voters in 2008, unconstitutional.

The decision concludes:
Because Proposition 8 is unconstitutional under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses, the court orders entry of judgment permanently enjoining its enforcement; prohibiting the official defendants from applying or enforcing Proposition 8 and directing the official defendants that all persons under their control or supervision shall not apply or enforce Proposition 8.
So first of all, WOW. And, YAY. (If, due to some unfortunate upbringing, closeted self-hating homophobia, or willful ignorance you were pro-Prop 8, uhhh... feel free to stop reading this blog. I promise I won't be offended. I'm tolerant like that. --Editor.) Both sides have already indicated plans to appeal the decision in the event of losing the case, so this is likely far from over. But, for today at least, get your jubilation on. Here in San Francisco, a rally is planned starting at Castro and Market at 5pm, with a few speeches, followed by a march to City Hall and a rally there at 6:45pm. So, expect some delays in your commute. Which will kinda pale in comparison to the delay in gay folks' equal rights, right? Yeah. No complaining. If you guys know of other events going on in the neighborhood (or city) tonight, go ahead and leave a comment to let people know about 'em. Congrats to gays and straights alike today-- equality is a good thing, no matter what your preferences. So, get out there and celebrate.
