Lower Haight Mural Takes Shape
This weekend, a slew of artists took their talents to the corner of Haight and Laguna to create a giant mural welcoming visitors to the Lower Haight. The project was supposed to wrap up by Sunday night, but the weather gods would have none of it. Some artists were able to finish their work; others will be returning over the course of this week to complete their sections of the wall. We stopped by on Saturday morning (before the rain started) to check out the artists in action. Then we followed up this morning to see how much progress was made. Here are some pics from the scene.

Ursula Xanthe Young works on her creation.
Ursula managed to finish much of her work before the rain started. Above, how it looked as of this morning.
Sonya Genel works on a detailed sketch of her work on the Laguna Street side of the wall.
Sonya was able to get some painting done before the rain started, but it looks like she may have to return this week to finish her design.
Artist Z-Man was working on an elaborate sketch involving a baby, a pacifier, and roaches -- but the rain interrupted his progress.
Hugh Leeman got an early jump on the project by making the panels for his design ahead of time.
Leeman was able to complete his work before the rain came.
Dee Jae Pa'este preps his workspace with a field of purple.
And his work, as it stands this morning. On the right, you can also see the beginnings of a work by Eric Broers (a.k.a. phoneticontrol).
Here you can see the sketch Broers prepped for his work.
From left to right, Doze Green, David Choong Lee, Nome Edonna, and Mars-1 prep their wall section in black for a collaborative piece.

While the group made good progress, it looks like they're not quite done.

Artist Andrew Perry paints a giant bird on the Laguna Street side.
The bird was almost finished before the rain started -- but clearly needs a little more work.
A section of wall on the Laguna Street side was reserved for community artwork.
Kate's Kitchen supplied some breakfast sandwiches and potatoes, while we hear Memphis Minnie's brought the lunch rations.
And finally, Elwood, the official dog of Lower Haters Gallery, could hardly contain his excitement while watching all the action. We'll keep an eye on mural progress this week and will post more photos when the project is officially complete. In the meantime, head down to Haight and Laguna today if you want to catch some of these great artists in action!
