Mother’s Day comes but once a year, and every year, we manage to dawdle, delay, or just plain forget until the very last minute. This year, stay under the wire with the help of your local merchants, some of whom have given us their picks for the perfect Mom’s Day.
Mother’s Day Cards (Merch, 629A Haight, $3-$6.95).
Choose from a selection of beautiful and distinctive letterpress cards for Mom, one of which is pictured above. Throw in a luxurious made-in-SF elizabethW candle, and you’ll be set to rock her world. Art Prints (D-Structure, 520 Haight, $70-$300). If she’s a creative soul (and you’re a generous one), D-Structure’s selection of Jason Cantoro and Alice Jarry prints make for a unique and lasting gift idea. Not in the market for art? Check out their Skeleton Heart Key ($40).
Bananagrams (Gamescape, 333 Divisadero, $18.95).
David at Gamescape thinks that, “Bananagrams is one of the best gifts a mother could receive,” and as word nerds, we’re inclined to agree. Not her scene? Choose from a selection of classic games such as chess, dominoes, backgammon, and much, much more.
The Balm (Swankety Swank, 289 Divisadero, $14-$40).
A staff favorite, this organic blend of edible and essential oils can be used to shine hair, soothe skin, and remedy dryness. Local, handmade, and part of the By Nieves body care line. Sounds pretty darn good to me.
Still looking? Here are more ideas to make Mama proud:
- For the boho mom: Modern, multicultural, bohemian clothes and jewelry at Aline’s Closet (101 Pierce).
- For the hippie mom: Huichol art, psychedelic posters and jewelry galore at Gallery 683 (683 Haight).
- For the Burner mom: Get 50% off all goods at P-Kok (791 Haight), and choose from a wide selection of crazy/cool clothes, jewelry and accessories.
- For the hip-enough-to-have-a-record-player mom: Search out old-school tunes and modern grooves at Rooky Ricardo's (448 Haight), Groove Merchant (687 Haight), and Black Pancake Records (593 Haight).
- For the retro mom: If mom's a little nostalgic (or just digs that vintage look), you'll find plenty of mid-century items like dishware, records, art and furniture at Mickey's Monkey (218 Pierce) and The Other Shop (327 Divisadero).
- For the traditional mom: You can't go wrong with flowers, and Xapno (678 Haight) has the most exotic selection around -- not to mention jewelry, candles, and cards. You'll also find plenty of flowers, crafts, and giftable curiosities at Prairie Collective (262 Divisadero). Or, if mom likes perfume, why not try making her a one-of-a-kind fragrance at Life (604a Haight)? Even if olfaction isn't your strong suit (go on, Google it), we're sure she'll appreciate the effort.
- For the cookin' mom: We'd never say a woman's place is in the kitchen, but if that's where mom likes to get creative, try digging through the incredible selection of culinary tools and accessories at Cookin' (339 Divisadero).
- For the local mom: Perhaps pamper her with a session at one of our many local beauty salons? Or treat her to brunch or dinner out with her favorite offspring (this means you) at a Lower Haight restaurant near you.
Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 8. Don’t forget to remember to not forget Mom this year. She deserves it!
