A few events, some fire updates, and some cornbread -- all in this week's leftovers. Let's do it.
Fecal Face Gallery, which was forced out of its location at 248 Fillmore due do last week's fire, announced that it has found a new gallery space in the Inner Richmond at 248 Clement Street. They'll open November 10th with a new show by the Lower Haight's own Mario Martinez, a.k.a. Mars-1.
Tomorrow night at Underground SF, it's the debut of a new Saturday night sensation, POP Brownie! Expect '90s hip-hop and R&B from the likes of SWV, En Vogue, and R. Kelly. This goes down from 10pm to 2am, with a $5 cover, at 424 Haight Street.
This week the RNM signage at 597 Haight Street finally came down: The owners of Maven tell us the new restaurant is on track for a mid-November opening.
Tonight, D-Structure (520 Haight) hosts Dark Curiosities, a group show sponsored by Redhook Beer. The show features works by more than nine artists, focusing on "the strange, dark, obscure, and curious... the things we find in the shadows." The opening runs tonight from 8pm to 11pm.
On Tuesday night, Wing Wings (422 Haight) will be hosting its first-ever pop-up dinner, this one a soul food affair curated by Goods Foods Catering. From 6-10pm, enjoy a menu that includes catfish and grits, meatloaf with buttermilk yams, and grandma's corn bread. No reservations needed, just walk in and eat (or take out).
This weekend, Artspan's Open Studios (when local artists open their studios to the public), reaches our neck of the woods. Open Studios focuses on different areas of the city throughout the month of October, and this weekend it's "the Western portion of San Francisco's" turn, from Ocean Beach to Hayes Valley. You can view all of this weekend's studio locations here, or pick up a guide book at Cafe Divis or Cafe du Soleil.
Fundraising efforts for those affected by last week's fire at Haight and Fillmore have hit the $10,000 mark, with Tuesday night's fundraiser at the Peacock Lounge raising more than $7,000 and over $2,000 being pledged online so far. The Lower Haight Merchants and Neighbors Association will begin distributing the money to tenants in the next few days. Also, plans for an online auction to continue raising funds are being finalized. In the meantime, please continue to spread the word.
Finally, many of you have been asking if the cause of the fire has been determined. A Fire Department spokesperson tells us that it's still under investigation, as they're still trying to track down a couple of people they need to interview. However, one detail they can clear up: those popping noises that many people heard during the fire? Those were exploding spray paint cans.
