It's the end of the road for the three Steiner Street redwoods, which were cut down in their prime today.
The trees' roots were apparently at odds with the Steiner Street sidewalk just north of Page Street, leading the Department of Public Works to order their removal despite some pleas from nearby neighbors to spare the mighty giants. A Haighteration reader sent in these pics from today's carnage. Not for the faint of heart, to be sure. Goodbye, red friends. We hardly knew ye.
