It was only fitting that Bay to Breakers fell on the same day as a "ring of fire" solar eclipse that hasn't been seen on US soil in almost twenty years.
But even an unusual solar eclipse couldn't upstage the 101st Halloween in May Bay to Breakers.
We stopped by in the morning to check out the costumes (or lack thereof). Things seemed pretty tame at Patricia's Green until a group of Moss Monsters showed up: We made our way down Hayes Street toward Two Sisters and realized the real party was happening over here. Everyone was hanging out above the parade route: Who was the most popular person along this part of the route? The guy playing the trombone, of course. Wearing what looked like to be a Superman cape, the trombonist was in an apartment above Two Sisters and played the notes leading up to "Charge!" every few minutes. The best moment came when a group of women all dressed as Princess Leia from Star Wars walked by and he played the Imperial March. Seriously. Many famous San Francisco landmarks made their presence at Bay to Breakers, including Sutro Tower (him)self: And how could we forget the love train?: Gumby made an appearance but there was no Pokey to be found: Even Mario and Luigi took a break from their Princess-rescuing to partake in the big event: We momentarily forgot that some people in costumes actually try to run the course: And since we love puns as much as any other blog, we couldn't help but find joy in the Bay to Bakers: If standing at Patricia's Green seemed overwhelming, you could always do what these guys did; throw a party on the roof of Marine Layer: Before we took off, we stepped into the street and got this picture looking up Hayes toward Alamo Square. Thousands of people, as far as the eye could see:
We returned to the same area around 2pm, expecting to find Hayes Street a disaster. But after looking around for a few blocks, it was hard to tell that hundreds of thousands of people just marched through town: It's hard to believe there wasn't much damage, but it was hard to spot. If you know of any, please share what you saw/found out.
So that was our experience at Bay to Breakers. How about you? Did you see anything you loved from the sidelines or were you there from the tortilla-throwing start?
