Who needs a copier when you can have a 123 year old letterpress?
Meet Andria Sato and her buddy, Peach. Andria is the owner of Lilikoi Design + Letterpress, a small business in Hayes Valley that began in Los Angeles but has been operating out of our neighborhood since May. Now meet her friend Peach. At 123 years old, Peach is a spry Old Style Platen. Made by Chandler & Price in 1889 (we’re talking Back to the Future 3 times, you guys), this machine is used to create hand-pressed designs, one color at a time. Andria began Lilikoi five years ago in LA after finishing her degree at Cal Poly (SLO) in Graphic Communications.
“I fell in love with letterpress” Andria told us. “It’s an old art, all done by hand, and all beautiful.”
So how did Andria get a hold of an antique like Peach?
“After I graduated, I was working in advertising” she began. “I wasn’t finding it creatively fulfilling. I bought the press from an old professor and did this on the side... and eventually it led to me starting my own business.”
Lilikoi Design + Letterpress offers several services and products: art direction, graphic design, letterpress, business identity, music album artwork, wedding invitations, baby announcements and business cards. With so much of our world existing online, Andria finds a way to blend the future with the past. As she explained to us, “letterpress is the oldest form of printing and dates back to Chinese woodblock printing.”
She still uses graphics programs for digital layout, but keeps it old-school when it comes to creating her products.
Andria is committed to making her entire process as sustainable as possible. Inks (which can be hand-mixed based on the specific color you want) are vegetable-based, and all the cleaning solutions use natural solvents. What’s even more impressive? No trees are used to make her product. Only recyclable and renewable cotton paper.
Andria and her husband relocated to San Francisco in February and it took her a few months until she found this studio. “I was looking for the right space in the perfect neighborhood and I was lucky to find this place” she said. “I love Hayes Valley. It reminds me of Venice Beach with all the individual shops and merchants.”
