Based on the amount of safety-related questions we received for the D5 Supervisors, we want to provide an update on some crime stats, prevention tips and upcoming meetings.
We spoke with Bob Barnwell, the Chairman of the Public Safety Committee for the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association, about criminal activity in the area. He shared with us a report provided by the Northern Police Station that describes the recent activity we've recently discussed. According to the report, "There has been an increase in robberies in the Northern District, just over 16% for the year. However this includes the entire Northern District (includes Lower Haight, Hayes Valley, Western Addition, Polk Gulch, part of Tenderloin, Marina, etc)." They mention that they are increasing patrols in several affected areas, such as the Lower Haight, Western Addition and Public Housing. In addition, it goes on to say the top preventative measure is situational awareness. Stick to well-lit paths and try not to walk around with your iPhone or iPad out, especially at night. Even though other items are being stolen, those are the top two mentioned in police reports. They will talk about using code enforcement laws in public safety.
