If there's one scapegoat that Haighteration commenters seem to enjoy blaming for all of the neighborhood's ills, it's the "hipster."
But what is a hipster, exactly?
Here's just a sampling of mentions of the word "hipster" in our comments section over the past six months: "the hipsters who are taking over the hood" "before all the hipsters (yuppies) gentrified the neighborhood" "i will try not to hold ur pseudo hipster mac dre a la 2004 look against you" "Does anyone know how many hipsters per square foot they will have a permit for?" "Let me guess, you are a twenty-something hipster?" "all those hipsters pouring into Dolores park on the weekend" "Parklets are hipster havens" "I'm the safety dork in a helmet stopping at every stop sign while hipster cyclists blow past me." "a bunch of Mission hipsters who don't live in the neighborhood" "Oh great, something to attract more damn hipsters." "If only everyone was as cool as you hipster trash." "Someone beat up a pack of hipsters?"
Given how often this word gets tossed around, we'd like to know what it means. Are hipsters just "yuppies" gentrifying the hood? Are they the cyclists blowing past us? Are they people who enjoy parklets? Or is this just a catch-all for people who, for one reason or another, get on our commenters' nerves? We invite -- no, encourage -- you to submit your definition of "hipster" in the comments below.
