The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association (HVNA) met last night for their monthly meeting. This edition in particular highlighted some exciting developments happening in our hood in the near future.
Hayes Valley Farmer's Market & Upcoming Plans First on the agenda was discussion of a potential Hayes Valley Farmer's Market. This venture would be a partnership with the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association, which already puts on similar marketplaces in different SF neighborhoods. “They are cognizant of the neighborhood they are going into,” Murrey Nelson, President of the HVNA, said during the meeting. According to Murrey, the project would launch with cherry season (March or April), and be housed on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm on Octavia between Hayes and Ivy. Murrey told attendees of the meeting that at first this would be a produce-only market, but the possibility of diversifying the offerings with artisans and live music in the future. The only thing they need to secure at this point are permits to block off the street, but they do have full support of the merchants in that location. Providing Fun and Safe Halloween Festivities for the Whole Family Next up, Richard Johnson, treasurer of HVNA, gave us the rundown of family-friendly events happening this weekend and on All Hallow's Eve. Tonight from 6pm – 8pm, the African American Art & Cultural Complex (762 Fulton) is hosting a Scary Movie Night for kids in its Buriel Clay Theatre. Tomorrow from 12pm – 3pm, The Western Addition SAFE Halloween Screamfest is at Margret Hayward Park (1016 Laguna) at Golden Gate. The event will feature a haunted house, food and games, music, goodie give-a-way, a costume contest with prizes and more. Rounding out the list of spooktacular events is a Haunted House & Halloween Party happening at Ella Hill Hutch Community Center (1050 McAllister) on Wednesday, October 31, from 6pm-8pm. The kid-friendly event is sponsored by the African Art & Culture Complex, Mo’ Magic, MAGIC Zone and Collective Impact. Public Safety and Combating the Rise in Robberies As we mentioned in a story last month, crime in the Northern District has increased by 16% from 2011, with assailants particularly targeting personal electronics (smart phones, music players and laptops). Bob Barnell, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, provided tips from the San Francisco Police Department Northern Station to curb this rise in crime, such as: don't walk around with your phone or laptop in plain sight. "Use common sense," he said during the meeting. With the holidays on the horizon, the HVNA and the Korean American Center want to arm holiday shoppers with some safety advice, as well as information about how to protect your home. So, on November 5, at 7pm, they will be hosting a public safety meeting to discuss just that. Get your monthly dose of the HVNA on the last Thursday of every month.
