'Noir City', SF's 11th Annual Film Noir Festival Brings Its Grit to the CastroNoir City 11th Annual Film Noir Festival
Noir City 11th Annual Film Noir FestivalBeginning January 25th and running through February 3, 'Noir City' San Francisco's unique Annual Film Noir Festival (FNF) returns to the Castro Theatre bringing with it 27 films for your viewing pleasure. 'Film Noir' is a French term that translates to 'Black Film' The label was used primarily to describe highly stylized crime dramas particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classical film Noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film Noir of this era is associated with a llow-key, black and white, visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Few city's make a better back drop for film noir than San Francisco's foggy, filtered light, shadow filled streets. In this perfect, ongoing Noir backdrop the FNF has found a bang-up home in our own Castro Theatre. Highlights this year include three brand new 35mm restorations funded by the FNF and the Noir-loving moviegoers of San Francisco! As always, Noir City will present both celebrated classics and wonderful rarities: some newly rescued from extinction and presented in glorious new 35mm prints, others screening for the first time in gorgeous 4K digital restorations.
