There’s no doubt that this year’s San Francisco Pride festival will be a doozy. The recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Proposition 8 have only made the celebration this weekend that much sweeter.
Here in Hayes Valley, many of our neighborhood stores will be celebrating by offering Pride-related items and discounts. Check out our breakdown of what to expect this weekend:
Bibliohead Bookstore (344 Gough) This mostly used bookstore carries a stock of vintage physique magazines and pamphlets. According to store staff, they also carry "after dark magazines from the 70's - 80's and some other fun old stuff." Chantal Guillon (437 Hayes) Come by to pick up a box of pride-themed macaron boxes from this dessert spot. Hayes Valley Bakeworks (550 Gough) Receive complimentary pastries with any Four Barrel coffee purchase on Saturday, from 8am to 5pm. (It's also their one year anniversary!) La Boulange (500 Hayes) All month long, La Boulange is offering a rainbow box of 7 macarons. A dollar from each purchase will be donated to the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation. Market Street Cycles (1592 Market) This local bike shop will be offering 10% off of all parts and accessories to anyone dressed up for the festivities. Miette (449 Octavia) Grab a sugar cookie to celebrate pride in the shape of rainbow-colored hearts. Pastry Cupboard (1596 Market) This sweet little shop at Page and Market will be serving rainbow cupcakes. San Francisco Zen Center (308 Page) On Saturday morning, there will be a dharma talk in the City Center Buddha Hall by Kansan David Zimmerman. He will be giving a talk titled "Pride, Doubt, Courage, Faith." On Sunday, the center will be marching as a group in the parade, leaving City Center at 9am and returning at 4pm for meditation and closing words. Smitten Ice Cream (432 Octavia) Our local ice cream stand will be featuring a special sundae to cool down patrons during this sure-to-be-hot weekend. According to their PR firm, "The Smitten Pride Sundae begins with their classic vanilla base, which uses cream from Beretta Family Organic Dairy, and is layered with raspberry caramel, lemon caramel and rainbow vanilla shortbread from Batter Bakery. Smitten Pastry Chef Robyn Lyn Lenzi devised the sundae to play with flavors, textures and colors. It is only an additional $1.75 to the size of your choice, available in the Hayes Valley shop for the month of June and is sure to be a summer favorite." Timbuk2 (506 Hayes) Purchase the limited edition pride strap pad, which you can put on almost any type of bag, for $18. Get a preview of the strap on their website.
