When the U.S. Supreme Court rules on Prop 8 and DOMA, thousands of Bay Area residents will flock to the Castro (6:30PM and into the evening) to react to what has been named, the Day of Decision. The exact day is unknown and many hoped that SCOTUS would be releasing their decision yesterday, but that did not happen. The last scheduled session this year is Monday, June 24th, 2013.  The Supreme Court will likely release their decision on either Thursday, June 20th; Monday, June 24th; or Thursday, June 27th. Although the Court could hold an additional session any day of the week, it has traditionally held them on Mondays and Thursdays to announce decisions. Local activists Justin Taylor, Alan Eckert, Kirsten Berzon, and Trey Allen, including many volunteers, have been working with March4Equality and Marriage Equality USA to setup an impromptu event for the Castro in the afternoon on the Day of Decision. According to the Day of Decision Facebook event page, there will be two stages; The Main Stage will feature a DJ and speeches from members of the community. The LGBT Performance Stage (19th and Castro) will be emceed by Donna Sachet and features a long list of performers and speakers including:
  • DJ Bryan Hughes
  • DJ Brian Maier
  • DJ Kelly Kid
  • Tara Wrist Drag Queen Performance
  • Mutha Chucka Drag Queen Performance
  • Juanita Fajita Drag Queen Performance
  • Xavier Toscano live vocals
  • Xavier Caylor and Centrifugal Force
  • Andru Lopes fire spinning
  • Inspiration by Kyle DeVries
  • More inspiration by Trey Allen
  • Bring the community together by Sergio Paz
  • Kit Tapata Drag Kinbg Performance
  • Alex U. Inn and Mamma's Boyz
In the event that the Supreme Court decides to uphold Prop 8 and DOMA, folks are being asked to still meet at Castro and Market. Organizers are working on a contingency plan. In this unlikely, but possible outcome, organizers are asking that folks maintain a peaceful and respectful demonstration despite the anger such an outcome might ignite. If you are available to volunteer for outreach, passing out fliers, clean up, etc., sign up here. Here's a great infographic from AFER that explains possible outcomes SCOTUS could decide with regard to Prop 8:
