Since July 4th week-end hundreds of poisoned meatballs have been found at local parks including Twin Peaks where three dogs have been made sick and one died this week. SFPD, SF SPCA and Animal Care and Control are advising all dog owners and dog walkers to take extra precautions when they're out tossing the ball or exercising with their four-legged charges as someone with an axe to grind has been leaving meaty treats laced with highly toxic Strychnine at green spaces frequented by dogs and their caretakers. These poison pellets are so toxic that if found pick up the evidence using either a plastic bag or gloves as the level of poison contained inside can be transferred via skin into your system causing you to become ill.
Oskar, RIP
Oskar, RIP
So far Dolores Park, Duboce Park and Eureka Valley Recreation Center's Collingwood dog run haven't been affected but seven other near by parks have including the Upper Market Twin Peaks park where the dangerous death treats were first discovered after being eaten by a Dachshund named Oskar. Sadly Oskar died on Thursday after putting up a fierce battle to stay alive leaving his owners, Debbie Schechter and family, heartbroken and left with a whooping $26,000 vet bill. Oskar’s death spurred the organization, Animal Legal Defense Fund, to offer a $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in the case. If you want to help Oskar's family with their bills you can donate via PayPal here.
SFPD is asking anyone who's been involved in a dispute, or had encounters with anyone over their dogs, to please call the Park Station investigations team at (415) 242-3000 and ask to speak with Lt. Pengel or Inspector Nannery as they investigate who is poisoning our animals. SFPD Meatball Poison Alert
