OUT Magazine loves to make lists almost as much as we love to read them.
Their latest, '200 Best Gay Bars in the World', compiled by OUT.com Editors is like all lists-subjective. No specific parameters or qualifications were given for their choices, other than they queried pals, took nominations and asked "experts" from around the world their opinion. I don't know what kind of resume one needs to be an 'expert' on worldwide Queer bars, but, I think you might need to have flunked out oft Betty Ford's Treatment Center at least once and wandered the Gay world from Dayton to Kathmandu and been very, very thirsty.
Regardless of how choices were made, choose they did, and three Castro LGBT watering holes found their way onto the list representing San Francisco. Matter of fact the neighborhood garnered three out of four of the top 200 slots beating out all others Citywide with the exception of SoMa's infamous, Hole in the Wall Saloon on Folsom Street.
Top tiered Castro world-wide winners:
The Lookout: The little neighborhood bar that could continues to shine perched atop the corner of 16th/Market and Noe Streets across from the Cafe Flore. Offering undying support for a multitude of LGBT sport teams with benefits every Sunday and sponsors of one of the top earners at this years AIDS Life Cycle riding teams. Their balcony doesn't hurt their cause either as it offers great views of the Castro and City plus all its many eligible and attractive citizens helped them be included in the list.
Badlands: One of the neighborhoods mainstays the heart of the 'Stro on 18th Street has gone through many transitions over the decades from down and dirty, Levi/Leather bar of the 70's where anything might happen in the bathroom to face-lifted video dance bar of the 21st century catering primarily to the younger set who love to dance to the never-ending soundtrack from the latest 180 beat per minute hits. A two for one daily happy hour helped boost their rating as well.
Moby Dick (sketch by Pete Scully)Moby Dick: Located on the corner of 18th and Noe Streets Moby's rounds out the third Castro pick in Out's 'Best 200 list'. The bar has a killer offering of new electronic music and videos to set the mood and a plethora of one of a kind free events. Their latest endeavor, Drink and Draw, artist sketch class every Monday all levels of welcome, has impressed as has the growing popularity of it's Dick@Nite event where anything and everything could happen from drag numbers by local star, David Glamamore, or a pack of shirtless hotties having a roll about under the pool table in the backroom helped Moby's make the cut.
Good to see three locals make OUT's grade. Did the editors get it wrong? What are your favorites and why? Look forward to reading everyone's feed back.
