Castro Crime Blotter & Legal Round UpArrest Made/Handcuffs
sfpd_logoPolice are asking for the public's assistance. They're looking for witnesses to an assault that took place between a couple and a Safeway security guard to come forward and help identify the attackers. On Monday, August 12th, near midnight a woman and man in their mid to late twenties were being escorted from the store on the 2000 block of Market Street after trying to pilfer beer. When confronted by store security to return the merchandise the pair attacked and beat the security guard in the head with a belt before making their getaway.  Though injured by the belt buckle, the guard refused to go to the hospital. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.

SFPD is continuing to investigate whether Mr. Porter-Bailey was involved in any other assaults, robberies or mayhem up and down Market Street that evening after the festivities of Pink Saturday had concluded. Chris Bucchere, the cyclist who hit and killed 71 year-old Sutchi Hui in the Market/Castro cross walk in 2012 was sentenced on Aug 15th. We've been following the landmark bike vs. pedestrian case since it reached its trial phase. Mr. Bucchere plead guilty and was sentenced for felony vehicular manslaughter. By doing so he avoided a trial where he could've been sentenced for a decade or more of prison time by a jury of his peers. Instead the judge gave him three years probation and 1000 hours community service. He did not address Mr. Hui's family in court when given the opportunity. Mr. Hui's son, Terry, spoke on behalf of the many members of his family that had gathered for the sentencing. Terry Hui said to Bucchere, “Please don’t squander this second chance you have to be a good and compassionate person and not to be the narcissistic person that you were when you wrote the insensitive web posting about my father.” Marriage CakeLastly, and welcomed news, SF Appeal reports on Wednesday, Aug. 14th the CA Supreme Court put the last, and what we hope to be, final stake into the heart of Prop 8 guaranteeing all you recent and future neighborhood newlyweds will stay hitched and can continue to get hitched. In a no holds barred ruling the court denied the anti-gay group Protectmarriage.com's request, shut down their writ's demands halting further marriages, and instead granted two petitions asking it not to hear oral arguments in the matter. This is the second such attempted end run around the US Supreme Court's June 28th ruling by anti-gay marriage activists. A similar suit was filed by the San Diego country clerk, Ernest J. Dronenburg Jr. Proposition 8 supporters could beat the dead horse one more time by trying to file a motion with one of the state's district courts to stop LGBT people from wedding again, but all legal experts believe that wouldn't work.
