The week-end has arrived and none to soon. Let's take a minute to review some of our picks for events, fundraisers, movies and fun to be had around the 'Stro.
Saturday kicks off at 2PM at the Castro Theatre (429 Castro St.) with an all day marathon of Jonathan Demme films. KrOB’S FILM FARM proudly presents Demme's four intimate, phenomenal and rarely seen documentaries in reverse chronology, spread out over two great double features in 35MM all-day Saturday. The films are 'Heart of Gold' with Bay Area fave, musician Neil Young, 'Storefront Hitchcock', a study of alternative musician Robyn Hitchcock, 'Swimming to Cambodia' starring the late performance art conversationalist Spaulding Grey and the night closes with 'Stop Making Sense', music and performance by one of America's most talented and ever evolving musical ensemble that popped out of NYC's late 70's Downtown scene, The Talking Heads. Each film is $12 or $12 for either the early or late double feature.
Saturday evening gives citizens two very different choices of entertainment. Option One: starting at 8PM, A Night Out For Trevor, an event that will benefit the Trevor Project, a national 24-hour, toll-free confidential suicide hotline for LGBTQ and questioning youth headquartered in SF in the Castro. The night will feature premium vodka tasting sponsored by Absolut, open bar, catered hors d’oeuvres, a wine raffle including signed estate bottles by area vintners and a bottle of Plumpjack cuvee signed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. They're also auctioning off New York City, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City Klimpton hotel packages. Tickets are $100 and all proceeds benefit the lifesaving work of The Trevor Project. The party takes place at Vanguard (2501 Mission St.)
Option Two: if that's a bit out of your price range pack a picnic, grab some pals and a blanket and head to Dolores Park (18th-20th St/Dolores-Church St.) for another one of their FREE Movie Night in Dolores Park. Screening tonight will be latest action feature from the James Bond franchise, 2012′s ‘Skyfall’ starring the hottest Bond yet, Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem taking a turn as the films über creepy, Gayish super villan and Oscar award-winning actress, Dame Judi Dench, reprising the role of ‘M’. Come early as it will be packed. The movie is slated to begin around dusk or 7:30PM which ever comes first.
Sunday the 22nd kicks off Leather Pride Week in San Francisco. Magnet SF (4122 18th St.) is hosting a reception celebrating the XXX (30th) anniversary of the largest one day street party in the world, The Folsom Street Fair. Magnet is inviting everyone over at 10AM for a FREE party that will honor the non-profit that's raise millions of dollars for multiple City non-profits while playing host to the world’s Leather/Fetish Community. Folsom posters from different decades will be on display for you to look at and enjoy. Beverages will also be served to wet your whistle. This is a pre-event for the annual LeatherWalk 2013 benefitting AIDS Emergency Fund and Breast Cancer Emergency Fund that begins promptly at 12PM at Harvey Milk Plaza (Castro & Market St.) Each year, hundreds of LeatherWalkers take over Market Street and march from the Castro to SoMa. This years route includes stops at some of San Francisco’s favorite watering holes and ends with a beer bust at the SF Eagle hosted by the Bare Chest Calendar Men. Wanna walk?
