Ah, the intersection of Haight, Market, and Gough Streets. So very unfriendly for pedestrians, so inefficient for Muni. Fortunately, the SFMTA is planning some upgrades for the area.

They include:
  • Creating a Muni-only eastbound lane from Laguna to Market. Currently Octavia to Market is westbound only, forcing eastbound Muni buses to turn left at Laguna and continue east on Page.
  • Widening sidewalks and construct bulbouts at the Haight/Gough/Market corners to make crossing the streets easier for pedestrians.
  • Upgrading traffic signals to better serve pedestrians
  • Constructing ADA-compliant curb ramps
  • Replacing sewer and water lines along Haight between Laguna and Market
  • Repaving Haight Street between Laguna and Gough
The project will get underway this winter, and is scheduled to take seven months to complete. The 6 and 71 Muni lines will be temporarily re-routed during construction, and there will be some street closures and parking restrictions as well. Tomorrow night, reps from the SFMTA will attend the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association's monthly meeting to discuss the project. Other topics on the agenda include the future of the PROXY space on Octavia, and proposed air quality legislation that would affect Hayes Valley. The meeting takes place tomorrow (Thursday) night at the Hayes Valley Playground Clubhouse at Hayes and Buchanan, from 7 to 8:30pm.
