News comes today that local neighborhood LGBT icon, slain civil rights leader and unofficial Mayor of Castro Street, Harvey Milk, will become the first openly Gay person to be honored with a memorial stamp by the US Postal Service. As we posted in May the rumor mill around the stamp has been in overdrive for quite some time. The effort to have a stamp issued in Harvey's likeness has been led in no small part by his nephew, Stuart Milk, who runs the international, LGBT/civil rights foundation that bears his late uncle's name. Stuart Milk posted this on his Facebook page:
"It is official! The USPS will confirm this week that my uncle, Harvey Milk will be commemorated on a 2014 US postage stamp. Another first! My deep gratitude to everyone that supported this effort! More details including the image to come via USPS soon! 'Hope Will Never Be Silent' - that enduring message will be represented by Harvey's image on millions of letters!"
National Coming Out Day LogoEven in death Harvey continues to blaze trails. What an amazing honor and one well deserved. Congrats to all the people who worked so hard to get this accomplished and what perfect timing since today is National Coming Out Day.
