Bryan Goodwin, a 30-year-old Oakland resident, well-known throughout the Castro community, was struck by a car and killed Monday night while crossing the Market/Octavia St. intersection near Rebel and the SF LGBT Community Center. Since the Central Freeway ramp opened in the Octavia Corridor at Market and Octavia in 2005, the intersection has seen a higher rate of traffic injuries than any other in SF; 30 since 2009 and 13 in 2011 alone, according to the SFMTA’s 2009-2011 Traffic Collisions Report [PDF]. Mr. Goodwin is the 13th person killed in the City this year by a car. Mr. Goodwin whose been confined to a wheel chair since an early age battling osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) a disease that left his bones brittle was in the cross walk post dinner with friends around midnight heading to catch a bus when he was hit. The driver involved stopped to assist, first responders arrived quickly and took Mr. Goodwin to SF General Hospital where he later died. Mr. Goodwin was remembered fondly by many in the Castro for his good humor, quick wit and ability to take life's odd twist and turns in stride. Matt Lovell, a former employee of 440 Castro and current SF Opera Company member, remembered him as, "..a great spirit. Was truly a positive, fun, and cool man who was a great part of our community." Mr. Goodwin hailed from Monterey and was a graduate of UC Berkeley in Linguistics. He was employed in the San Francisco office of the federal governments EPA department. His co-workers were in a state of shock following the televised news of his death. Funeral and memorial arrangement are pending. He is survived by his mother Francine and a wealth of friends.
