Heard of the The Wiggle Neighborhood Greenway project? If you haven’t and you live, bike, drive or walk in Lower Haight you may want to attend tomorrow night's open house.
A few months ago we mentioned that there were some proposed changes underway, and now the official unveiling of plans for the new and improved Wiggle are here. A few highlights: - Traffic diversion directing all southbound traffic on Scott from Hayes to turn onto Fell - The installation of “reduction strips” (rumble strips for cyclists) to slow bike traffic at intersections - Rerouting of the Wiggle to move the bike lanes to (slightly hillier) Pierce between Haight and Page, instead of Scott Street - Making Scott Street one-way for cars but two-way for cyclists between Fell and Page How did all these changes get suggested? Well, by you, in theory! Since last summer the SFMTA, SFDPW, and SFPUC have been holding neighborhood meetings to receive input and hear concerns about the current state of the Wiggle. Based on all of those meetings, as well as a survey they handed out, they’ve drafted up a pretty epic document detailing desired changes to make the Wiggle safer and greener. The final open house to unveil proposed changes is happening tomorrow, Wednesday January 22nd from 5pm - 7:30pm at the Electrical Workers Union Building at 55 Fillmore. Stop on by and learn what’s in the works to make the Wiggle safer, greener, and calmer for everyone. It’s your neighborhood, after all. Update 1/22: The SFMTA contacted us today to clarify a couple of details. While Scott Street would be made one-way for through traffic, residents would still be able to travel northbound on Scott and make a U-turn to park on the southbound side of the street. Also, the block of the Wiggle between Haight and Page would not be relocated from Scott to Pierce in this latest plan.
