A couple of new Hayes Valley structures have gotten press this week for being among the city's most interesting new buildings.
The opening of the SFJAZZ Center (above) in January of 2013 was declared the "high point" of the year in Bay Area music, according to the Chronicle. Meanwhile, several experts polled by real estate site Curbed chose SFJAZZ as their best new building of the year. "It's sleek and cutting-edge, but still blends in nicely with its existing surrounding buildings," said Catherine Kwong, Principal of Catherine Kwong Design. Maggie Driscoll, the Executive Director of AIA San Francisco, also chose SFJAZZ as SF's best new addition. "What a gift to the City!!!" she exclaimed. Another Hayes Valley structure making Curbed's list: the Aether Apparel store at Hayes and Octavia. The store, which also opened in January of 2013, is noted for its clever construction, consisting of three stacked shipping containers. Erin Feher, Editor-in-Chief of California Home + Design magazine, describes the Aether shop as "So smart, small and sexy--qualities lacking in so much of the other new construction." Trendhunter, a... trend-hunting website, cited Aether as an example of one of its top 85 retail trends of 2013, the modular clothing store. (Although, the site also listed the trend as one of its top 100 publicity stunts.) Do you agree with these choices, or are you unimpressed by Hayes Valley's new architectural stars? If you've got an opinion, share it in the comments section below.
