Is This Google's April Fools' Day Joke?Photo: Flickr / jonrussell
Are Lower Haighters being recruited to record their voices for Google's April Fools' Day prank?

That's the question we're mildly interested in answering, after spotting this gig posted recently in the Lower Haight section of Craigslist:

"Hello! We need good quality female voiceover audio for a top secret Google video that will be released on April 1st. The task is super simple: record yourself in the highest possible sound quality saying the following very short phrase in a variety of ways: "Be my PAL." That's "pal" (as in friend) and not spelled out "P-A-L". Rate is $100 flat if we use your voice in the video, and the best-sounding voices will be selected. The video will be seen by millions of people all across the globe. We need recordings in French (Canadian), French (European), Portuguese (Brazilian), Korean and Russian. Female voices only. If need be, we can help you record the audio here at our offices in San Francisco. Please feel free to contact us with any questions!"

We did a quick... oh, let's say Bing search, and discovered some speculation that Google will be launching something called Google Pal soon, possibly as an April Fools' joke.

Why they would only be targeting female voices in the Lower Haight remains a mystery, and frankly the whole posting itself could be some strange meta-joke.  Either way, we'll
find out tomorrow.  Or possibly not.

Anyway, back to the thunderstorm.
